A recent web development project I worked on for a wedding photographer in Cornwall was a real test of my optimization skills. Working on a tight budget, Apple Photographic have managed to get their site perfoming well for broad search terms such as “Wedding Photographers Cornwall” and “Wedding Photography in Cornwall”. This is no mean feat, considering the competition in the wedding photography proffession. Their success is due to a great site design, beautifully coded pages, relevant content and regular blog entries by the site owners.

The blog enables a site to grow and include new content on a regular basis. If Google’s spiders crawl a site and they see the same pages day in day out they will be likely to think “no-one needs to visit this site” and drop your position; which brings me on to another point worth noting: optimization is a collaboration. You, the site owner, need to get out there get writing and get people linking to your site. My role is to make sure that your pages are elegantly programmed so that your content is easy to access for search spiders, but don’t expect to remain in top spot if you neglect your website as soon as it’s been built.
